Classrooms in the Dust: Building Temporary Learning Centers for Displaced Children
About This Campaign
The drought in Northern Kenya didn't just kill livestock — it destroyed schools and displaced thousands of children.
Across Wajir and Garissa counties:
1.12 schools have closed in the last 18 months due to lack of water and children fleeing with their families
2. Over 3,000 children are out of school — some for 2+ years
3. Remaining "schools" meet under trees — no shade, no desks, no blackboard
4. When rains come, learning stops. When it's 38°C, children faint.
The solution is urgent and practical.
We will establish 6 Temporary Learning Centers (TLCs) in camps and villages where displaced families have settled. Each TLC includes:
1.A durable shade net or tent
2. Basic desks and chairs (or local mats)
3. Blackboards, chalk, books, pencils
4. One trained teacher and one teaching assistant
5. A safe water container and separate latrine for girls
