From Hunger to Hope: Emergency Cash & Livelihoods for Extreme Poverty
About This Campaign
Extreme poverty in Northern Kenya is not just about low income — it's about zero income for months at a time.
In Turkana and Mandera counties:
1. Over 60% of families live below the extreme poverty line (less than $1.90 per day)
2. Many families have no cash at all — no livestock to sell, no crops, no relatives to borrow from
3. When drought hits, they survive on one meal of porridge every two days
4. Children are pulled from school. Families beg. Mothers do casual labor for $0.50 a day.
Cash works. It's proven.
Direct cash transfers allow families to:
1. Buy food immediately — no waiting for aid deliveries
2.Restart small businesses — selling tea, vegetables, phone charging, charcoal
3. Pay for healthcare and school fees
4. Regain dignity — choosing what their family needs most
But cash alone is not enough. We combine emergency cash with business training and savings groups to create lasting change.
