About Doctors Without Borders / Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF)

Founded in 1971 by a group of French doctors and journalists after the Biafran famine, Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF) – known as Doctors Without Borders in English – is the world's leading independent medical humanitarian organization. MSF provides emergency medical care to people affected by armed conflict, epidemics, natural disasters, and exclusion from healthcare in more than 70 countries worldwide. The organization operates independently of any political, military, or religious agendas, basing its actions solely on medical ethics and the principles of impartiality, neutrality, and independence. MSF's 68,000+ staff – including physicians, nurses, logisticians, and administrators – work in some of the world's most dangerous and remote locations. In 1999, MSF received the Nobel Peace Prize in recognition of its pioneering humanitarian work. The organization refuses to accept funding from governments or institutions that would compromise its independence, with 90%+ of funding coming from private donors.
